Flash and JAWS

Often when working in web pages JAWS can become stuck, refusing to move any farther. Often times this can be due to an embedded flash movie. Below are instructions for both temporarily disabling flash and permanently disabling it. Note that flash is only disabled while JAWS is running so nonJAWS users won't notice.

Temporarily Disabling Flash

While in your web browser:

  1. Press JAWSKey+V to open the adjust user verbocity dialogue.
  2. Press the letter F twice, or until you find Flash Movies.
  3. Press SPACEBAR to toggle the setting.
  4. Press ENTER to exit the dialogue.

Permanently Disabling Flash

  1. Press JAWSKey+F2 to open the Run JAWS Manager dialogue.
  2. Press C until you find Configuration Manager and press ENTER to open it.
  3. Press ALT+S to open the Set Options menu and then the letter H to open the HTML Options dialogue.
  4. Press CTRL+SHIFT+TAB to switch to the Misc tab.
  5. Press ALT+I to toggle the Ignore Flash checkbox.
  6. Press ENTER to exit the dialogue.
  7. Press CTRL+S to save the changes in the default configuration file.
  8. Press ALT+F4 to exit the Configuration Manager (if you are asked to save changes you should choose Yes).

Notes

The JAWSKey is generally the INSERT key.

To return your settings to their previous state, simply follow the instructions again.

I have used JAWS 5.0 and later to develop these instructions; if you have an older version these instructions may or may not be accurate.
